Tim Curry was a man who seemed immortal. His legend spoke louder than any of his films could sum up. Curry was a talent who we were lucky to have been around to witness.
Sadly, that talent took his final breaths on 25th August 2026. And he will be missed by millions.
Tim Curry was born in Grappenhall, Cheshire, on 19th April 1946. His parents often moved about, but they settled in Plymouth, Devon, when he was 11.
In an eerie case of family health issues being passed down, his dad had a stroke when Curry was 12 and died weeks later. Curry himself would suffer a stroke in 2012, which affected him until his death.
His first professional job was in the West End production of Hair in 1969, where he played Woof. He followed this up with several productions on and off the West End and around the UK.
In 1973, he found success with the musical Rocky Horror Picture Show, where he played the queer icon Frank N. Furter.
This musical was a hit, and within a year, it was moved to LA for a successful run at the Roxy Theatre before it transferred to Broadway, where it didn’t do as well.
Then, in 1975, he would be given the option to shoot his first screen role in the film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Though the film didn’t perform well at first, it found a home on the midnight screenings and became a cult hit. This is what made Curry a star.
After this film, he would book his first television roles on Napoleon in Love as well as a spot on Armchair Theatre.
After the success of the film adaptation, Curry returned to the stage and was cast in multiple Broadway and West End Shows.
He also continued to act in films starring in the notable The Ploughman’s Lunch.
1985 was another breakout year as he appeared in two films he will always be associated with. The Ridley Scott film Legend in which he played The Darkness and Clue playing Wadsworth.
He moved to the USA full-time in the 80s which allowed him to appear in more Hollywood films like Oscar, The Hunt For Red October as well as two memorable roles in Home Alone 2 and Muppet Treasure Island.
Tim is known to Horror fans for his stand out role in the 1990 mini-series based on the Stephen King book IT. He played Pennywise, an inter dimensional creature that shape-shifts and uses the figure of a clown to terrorise the the town of Derry, Maine. This would mark his second cult hit film.
Curry was known for his comedic talents but a role he impressed me with that showed the true nature of his acting was his stint as criminal Billy Flynn on two episodes of Criminal Minds in 2010.
In 2012 his career took a turn for the worse when, like his own father, he suffered a stroke which ended his theatre career and would leave him permanently paralysed and suffer from speech issues.
Though he continued to act in voice over roles and minor roles, his health never improved though his facial expressions did get better.
Sadly, he would pass away aged 80 leaving this world one star brighter.
