The Mercury Prize shortlist is here

Yes it’s that time of year again when we dimly remember that there was once a company called Mercury who sponsored a music prize which has far outlasted them, and as we look down a list of eclectic and painfully trendy choices in search of new treats we can seek out.

So on this year’s shortlist of twelve, ten have never appeared before, which is excellent really. There’s Wet Leg, who we hope win, there’s Sam Fender, aka the British Springsteen, and there’s Harry Styles and his, err, about nine different writers? There’s also Gwenno whose album is mostly in Cornish.

The Winner will be announced on September 8th.

Fergus McCreadie – Forest Floor
Gwenno – Tresor
Harry Styles – Harry’s House
Jessie Buckley and Bernard Butler – For All Our Days That Tear The Heart
Joy Crookes – Skin
Kojey Radical – Reason To Smile
Little Simz – Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
Nova Twins – Supernova
Sam Fender – Seventeen Going Under
Self Esteem – Prioritise Pleasure
Wet Leg – Wet Leg
Yard Act – The Overload
