Public interest in the Oscars has been dropping off in recent years if viewing figures are anything to go by, as has interest in going to cinemas to see movies. The Oscars response… is to bow to streaming.
The Oscar ceremony has basically been on ABC for fifty years, but that will end in 2028 and for 2029 – and until at least 2033 – the show will now be on YouTube.
“The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible – which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community,” the bosses explained.
An incredible move.
