astronomyy – don’t need u

June 27, 2013

“I never really thought about it, I never cared, something’s holdin’ me back it’s in the back of my head”, double-tracked, intimate vocals enclose you whilst your magnetised by dripping jolts down a soft fretboard; astronomyy soon has you in a contemplative mood.

This Worcestershire-based writer finds solace in the stars, it seems, as his tweets will tell you.

Where ‘don’t need u’ enthrals is within its evolving texture. The whistles of ‘oos’ are soon juxtaposed by ‘Fitzpleasure’-type grimey synthesisers, creating a groundswell of depth. I adore the glimpses of distant guitars and vocals in the latter stages of the 5-minute number.

It manages to walk the tightrope between contemporary beat and classique, one which the majority lose their balance on.

There’s subtlety and craft on this piece that you’ll seldom find on many debut singles, and there’s no wonder why he’s rocketed in the direction of the moon in little more than 70-odd hours.

Go and catch him live at Ringmaster Festival in Worcestershire on the 28th of September.
