Bobbie Gordon – Skin

April 4, 2013

Bobbie Gordon releases her first slice of new material in a fair while. As an in-demand vocalist, who has performed with Adele, Cee Lo Green, The Noisettes and more, it’s pretty impressive that she has time to squeeze out anything at all. It takes a different direction from the sunshine pop of previous efforts, however the soulful voice that allured many to her in the first place remains. The sound is far more electronic, with a modest production that complements Gordon’s expressive vocal delivery.

The song is the title-track of her upcoming June EP, and in this context it works perfectly. A record could take on any number of directions with this as its foundation layer. It retains the attitude of her earlier material without being unnecessarily bolshy, it’s a very smooth number that glides without becoming comfortably dull. There’s a seductive yet distant emotion, promising something less restrained once the EP is released. It’s too early to speculate on exactly how the EP will sound, but this early trickle suggests that it will be one to spend a good bit of time with.
