Cass Lowe – Birthmark

July 30, 2013

For those who heard some of Cass Lowe’s earlier work as a budding songwriter, the past few years have been mildly frustrating. After quietly putting out some wildly beautiful live studio recordings (including a joyfully large version of ‘New Slang‘) he’s mostly been hiding away writing for other artists such as Toddla T, Shola Ama, Ronan Keaton, Alison Moyet and a load more, the lucky sods. But this morning a new video dropped, it did not disappoint.

A breathy and clicking intro welcomes Cass back into the fold, his voice is high and soft, yet masculine and comforting. It’s icy electronic Pop that is given a warming breath of soul. There’s drama, there’s danger and there’s a great sweep of cold isolation. Spacious and expansive, hopefully a pre-cursor that something monstrous is coming in the future. If that’s all thesaurus-aided garble to you, then imagine a very good mix of Bastille and Tom Odell.

It could do with an extra minute or two to get really supanova. Anyone who has heard some of Cass’s previous work would not begrudge him a bit of self-indulgence. But there will be chances for that in the future.

Check out the video below, and buy the single if you enjoy it.
