After 2013’s Monomania, Deerhunter have today returned with a new single, ‘Snakeskin’ from a new record in ‘Fading Frontier’.
The piece is immediate, rolls with a unique and uneven Southern groove. Whether that’s a banjo, a slackjaw set of steel strings or a Nile Rodgers-type funk guitar motif, this is an unusual piece for the group to release, but immediately infectious. Ending with a characteristic 90 second playout, the piece descends into movements of strings, backward samples and a swamping of rhythmic interaction.
It is the group’s first piece of activity since singer Bradford Cox was involved in a car accident and hospitalised this past December. Judging from the ‘Snakeskin’ video below in which he stars however, Cox seems to have recovered well:
