In the wake of Handsome Furs, ex-Wolf Parade man Dan Boeckner’s recently-finished project with wife Alexei Perry, it seems that there was a progression in place. It was not a cynical one but a dynamic continuation, coming in the form of Divine Fits. Wolf Parade was a Canadian-Indie supergroup, and with bandmates in the form of Britt Daniel (Spoon) and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks) it is of a similar ilk.
Boeckner has always been a riveting frontman. He manages to escape scrutinisation on his vocal tics, and exploding into uncomfortable parts of his range like not many others do. The eccentric idiosyncrasies were heard no better than on Wolf Parade’s hit ‘We Built Another World’ – and, whilst this is of a more relaxed, gradual intensity, he offers so much to the soul of Divine Fits already: ‘My Love Is Real’ being repeated and squelched leaves an imprint.
The synth and rhythm ensemble are flat throughout, rarely developing beyond the second verse; however conversations between the claps, keys and quaver-melodies create an abstract characteristic which somehow compliment the lyrical and vocal offering.
As a single, it’s a slightly forgettable effort, but there’s more than enough in the fabric of the group which ensure that their freshmen album will guarentee quality.
