Doomscroller by Metric

June 14, 2022

Formed in 1998, Metric are now technically in their fourth decade, but they’re still putting out compelling music. In might sound glib or easy, but new single Doomscroller is the Canadian’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

Why? It’s epic. It’s ten – never boring – minutes long, it’s got plenty of tone changes, sing along moments and is among the band’s best work. Okay, there’s not the theatrics of Queen, but Metric never operated like that. They’re a synth and guitar indie band, and a damn good one. Instead Doomscroller is their career encapsulated in one brilliant piece. The lyrics focus on the problems of the now, and let’s face it doomscrolling (the act of seeing depressing internet piece after another on your phone) is all we’ve been doing for the last two years.

It takes a special act to be as involving and immediate as Metric are after twenty four years, but Doomscroller really is. The only negative is the music video’s rubbish, but a. this is a song, and b. they have ten minutes to fill, so who cares.
