Here’s something different for your Friday afternoon.
It sounds more like Leo Sayer than Har Mar Superstar but that’s not a bad thing. Down to the washing snare sound, the Hammond organ and the omniscient quality of the vocal; the most meticulous details depict a contemporary piece written in the style of a vintage R&B number. There’s a strength in the desperate crooning nature of the vocal however, the dialogue still may be the weakest nuance of ‘Lady, You Shot Me’, though I understand its lyrical style is intentional.
With Sean Na-Na’s seminal debut record and tongue-in-cheek songs like ‘Power Lunch’, Har Mar has long shown a depth in quality of songwriting. The intelligence and depth apparent on this brand new single continues to portray what he’s capable of. Let’s hope that this summer’s album Bye Bye gestures in the direction of his full potential.
