Jagwa Ma – The Throw

January 25, 2013

Christ knows what they’ve been slipping in the water in Sydney these last couple of years, but there’s a lot of kids there who’ve gone waaaaay out, and I don’t know if they’re coming back. Early last year Jagwa Ma released the sublime Run Come Save Me, which pulled off the unlikely trick of joining the dots between Phil Spector and pill fuelled house euphoria, and left us grinning from ear to ear. This time they’re back with the soaring, floating vocals, the little chanting bits that sound like a lysergic zoo choir, and some rolling breakbeats that are baggy as Ian Brown’s pre noughties jeans. The Throw sprawls over your speakers like a stoner on a sofa, happy and languid and not in any hurry, and we’re loving it. It sounds like they’ll be amazing live, catch em at one of their forthcoming UK dates –

21.2 – Bungalows & Bears, Sheffield
22.2 – Start the Bus, Bristol
26.2 – Birthdays (NME Awards Show), London
