Marina and The Diamonds has returned with a new song/video ‘Fear and Loathing’ which appears to be the premise for a new storytelling album about her fictional character Electra Heart.
‘Fear and Loathing’ is a powerful ballad – based around the theme of ‘change’ and the realisation of the American Dream never materialising. The song – which was released yesterday – acts as Part One of the Electra Heart story and will be followed next Monday (August 15) by another new track with ‘Part Three’ following later this year.
Marina said: “I don’t even know if it’s going to take the form of an album yet, but it’s a really cinematic 70s Americana-type film and each part of the story comes in Part One, Part Two, Part Three. The song that’s gone online is Part One. It’s quite hard to explain because I think a lot of people will think Electra Heart is an alter ego or something but she’s not, it’s kind of basically a vehicle to portray part of the American dream, with elements of Greek tragedy and that’s all going to be coming out through the visuals. It’s hard to explain but I think you’ll see it when it all comes together.”
The video shows Marina in a black dress applying make-up in a hotel bathroom before chopping her long locks into a ragged bob haircut. It’s a completely different bag of tricks to her debut album ‘The Family Jewels’.
While it might not be so happy, and up-beat as her last release – it’s certainly powerful and emotive and it will be interesting to see where this story will take us. I suppose we’ll find out at 4pm on Monday 15 when ‘Part Two’ is launched.
Why not give it a listen, and tell us what you think!
