Former SupaJam Fast Track finalists New Riot have spent the last couple of years honing their craft on the road, taking their brass augmented ska punk round the UK, Europe and the States and supporting scene big hitters Reel Big Fish and Suburban Legends. Now they’ve reshuffled the band, jumped back into the lab, and emerged from recent studio sessions with this 5 tracker Raising the Stakes. Whilst the horns are still very much an integral feature, the ska sound New Riot cut there teeth with has taken a back seat to bold poppy production and brash melodies. The band’s American influence can be heard in both the gleaming new directon they’ve taken, and quite explicitly in the opener Land of Opportunity– a love letter to the States and its gilded promise. On tracks such as Live Fast Die Young and Girl From Hell the band continue to effortlessly nail big radio friendly production – no mean feat in itself. The title of this EP suggests that New Riot are ready to ratchet things up to the next level. This adrenalin shot of buzzsaw melodies may well have the energy and hooks to do so.
