In the interests of professionalism, this review of My Chemical Romance’s surprise return single isn’t just a tiktok of me dancing around deliriously happy, although that pretty much happened when ‘The Foundations of Decay’ dropped suddenly last night. In it, after a break which saw singer Gerard Way conquer comics and television, the band returned with a full on triumph… because Gerard knows you can’t go directly back to the past without simply being nostalgia, so he’s written a song which every single My Chem fan will be able to vibe with: in part, it tackles aging.
Yep, emo fans aren’t young anymore, and neither are the band. So yes, there’s long building sections, screaming hits of emotion, clever and affecting lyrics, all wrapped up in a familiar sound, but the whole thing is stately, matured like a black clad cheese rather than just trying to scream into a three minute void.
We don’t know if there will be an album, or whether this is MCR’s version of Pulp’s After You, a single dropped after many years which was every bit as good as the past to let us know they’ve never lost it. But for now, enjoy, if that’s quite the right word, a band who got older but no less glorious.
