Vondelpark started life as one the many ‘UK Garage plus shoegaze guitars’ outfits that sprung up a couple of years back. Since then they’ve progressed onwards, and if this single is anything to go by, the future looks bright – muted, and shot on grainy Super 8, but bright nonetheless.
California Analog Dream has more in common with the heartfelt folktronica of Alt-J than Vondelpark’s R&S labelmates. Originally released on the Sauna EP back in 2010, the early version had an insistant garage shuffle, with Lewis Rainsbury’s vocals harsh in the mix, obscured and distant. Now the 2 step fidgit has been replaced with a more languorous rhythm, and Rainsbury has become far more confident, pushing his voice upfront to form a welcome plaintive thread running through the track. The re-recording has found the potential that always lay within and the end result really is a thing of beauty. The band have an album coming on April 1st -and without wanting to be a jinx or anything – on this showing it could be an early Mercury contender.
